But what if there's something happening behind the scenes that's quietly stopping people from finding you? The reality is that some of the biggest SEO issues aren't visible on the front end. They're buried within your website's technical setup, silently affecting your Google rankings, limiting your visibility and reducing the return on your digital marketing. At iPOP, we see these issues all the time. Some are common, some are surprisingly obscure, and almost every website we audit has at least one technical issue that's holding it back. ### It's often the things you can't see Technical SEO isn't the glamorous side of digital marketing. It doesn't make for flashy social posts or eye-catching videos. But it's often the difference between a website that performs and one that simply exists. Here are just a few examples of issues we've uncovered during website audits: ![Ipop seo 01 noindex tag white](https://www.ipopdigital.com/transforms/0a658b510e0d8ab6ba58433bdc7c7c3c/6390/ipop-seo-01-noindex-tag-white_0ecaab96a79c266f4e442dc02319c508.webp) ### Your website is telling Google not to index it This one sounds unbelievable, but it's more common than you'd think. Many content management systems include a simple "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" setting while a website is in development. Occasionally, that box never gets unticked before launch. The result? Google is effectively being told to ignore your website. - [**Try our free SEO audit tool**](https://www.ipopdigital.com/seo-geo-audit-tool) > ![Ipop seo 02 robots txt white](https://www.ipopdigital.com/transforms/0a658b510e0d8ab6ba58433bdc7c7c3c/6391/ipop-seo-02-robots-txt-white_0ecaab96a79c266f4e442dc02319c508.webp) ### Your robots.txt file is blocking search engines A robots.txt file helps search engines understand which parts of your website they should crawl. When configured incorrectly, it can block important pages from Google or even prevent AI search crawlers from accessing your content altogether. With AI-powered search becoming increasingly important, these small configuration errors can have a much bigger impact than they once did. ![Ipop seo 03 text in images white](https://www.ipopdigital.com/transforms/0a658b510e0d8ab6ba58433bdc7c7c3c/6392/ipop-seo-03-text-in-images-white_0ecaab96a79c266f4e442dc02319c508.webp) ### Google can't read the content on your pages Beautiful imagery is important, but search engines can't read text that's embedded inside an image. If your product descriptions, service information or key messaging only exist as graphics, Google has very little content to understand, index or rank. A page might look fantastic to your customers while appearing almost empty to a search engine. - [**Try our free SEO audit tool**](https://www.ipopdigital.com/seo-geo-audit-tool) > ![Ipop seo 04 canonical tags white](https://www.ipopdigital.com/transforms/0a658b510e0d8ab6ba58433bdc7c7c3c/6393/ipop-seo-04-canonical-tags-white_0ecaab96a79c266f4e442dc02319c508.webp) ### Every page is pointing to your homepage Canonical tags tell Google which version of a page should be treated as the original. We've seen websites where every page mistakenly references the homepage as its canonical URL. In simple terms, the website is telling Google: *"Ignore this page — the homepage is the one that matters."* That means valuable service pages, landing pages and product pages struggle to rank, no matter how good the content is. Without an SEO audit, you have no way of knowing how your website is actually appearing to search engines. ## Why technical SEO matters more than ever Search engines have become significantly smarter, but they're still reliant on websites being built correctly. Google needs to understand: - Which pages to crawl - Which pages to index - How your content is structured - What each page is about - Which version of a page should rank If those foundations aren't in place, even the best content, strongest branding or biggest advertising budget can only go so far. - [**Try our free SEO audit tool**](https://www.ipopdigital.com/seo-geo-audit-tool) > ## Why we always start with an SEO audit Whether we're designing a new website, rebuilding an existing one or launching a Google Ads campaign, we always begin with a technical website audit. #### *Why?* Because there's little point driving more traffic to a website that's unknowingly limiting its own performance. An audit allows us to identify the hidden issues before they become expensive problems. It also ensures we're building on solid foundations, giving every marketing activity the best possible chance of success. ## Don't worry if this all sounds like another language Canonical URLs. Robots.txt. Crawl budgets. AI search indexing. Most business owners shouldn't need to know what any of these terms mean. **That's exactly why we're here.** Our job isn't just to find technical SEO issues; it's to explain what they actually mean for your business. Sometimes it's fewer enquiries. Sometimes it's wasted Google Ads spend. Sometimes it's valuable pages that should be bringing in customers but simply aren't being seen. The good news? Most technical SEO issues are completely fixable once they're identified. - [**Try our free SEO audit tool**](https://www.ipopdigital.com/seo-geo-audit-tool) > ## Is your website working as hard as it should? Technical SEO isn't the most exciting part of digital marketing, but it's often the foundation everything else relies on. Before investing in a new website, SEO, or paid advertising, it's worth asking one simple question: ***Is my website actually giving Google every opportunity to rank it?*** If you're not sure, we'd be happy to take a look. Sometimes the smallest technical fix can make the biggest difference to your website's visibility, search rankings and long-term performance. - [**Try our free SEO audit tool**](https://www.ipopdigital.com/seo-geo-audit-tool) > Share Article ## More news from our digital agency.
